The Election Commission held the government responsible for the delay in delimitation
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has blamed the government for the delay in delimitation of constituencies. I could not have written letters to the government for the census and called for speeding up the process but they did not.
Dawn newspaper reported that in response to strong criticism from former cabinet members Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Shireen Mazari, Fawad Chaudhry and Farrukh Habib, a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Election Commission said that the commission did its best. Fulfilling the
constitutional obligations, is active for its legal and constitutional obligations and has the ability to hold general elections in accordance with the law and the constitution, where we are committed to fulfilling our legal duties, while other institutions and personalities. It must also fulfill its legal and constitutional obligations in a timely manner.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has said that after the amalgamation of the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and the reduction of tribal seats from 12 to 6, the number of National Assembly constituencies has been reduced from 272 to 266. Delimitation was guaranteed which would not have been possible in the absence of official census results, the Chief Election Commissioner wrote a letter to Imran Khan on 7 May 2020 drawing his attention to the issue and the official results. He was requested to intervene for information. Letters have been written to other concerned constituencies, including the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, as well as to the Secretaries of the Senate, National Assembly and Statistics Agency.
The ECP further said that all these bodies were also reminded that delimitation of constituencies was a constitutional responsibility of the commission but it could not make any progress till the final census. The results are not officially announced, after which the demarcation process finally began when the official census results were announced on May 7, 2021, but were stopped following a government announcement that The new digital census will be conducted, after which letters were written to the government on 30 December 2021 and 21 January 2022 urging them to expedite the census process but they did not do so. ۔
