Supreme Court suspends second phase of local body elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court SC has issued notices to the parties suspending the decision of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) to postpone the second phase of local body elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa KP . According to details, Justice Ejaz-ul-Haq and Justice Ayesha Malik in the Supreme Court heard the petition against the decision of the Peshawar High Court to hold the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa local body elections in the second phase.
The ECP counsel argued that the Peshawar High Court Abbottabad Bench had postponed the schedule of local body elections without hearing the ECP. Had delayed
Elections of 18 districts have been postponed on the request of postponing election schedule in 5 districts.
The lawyer representing the complainants in the court argued that the election could not be held on March 27 due to weather conditions. On the ECP's appeal, Justice Ayesha Malik said that the Peshawar High Court should have heard the ECP's position before making the decision. It was not confirmed that the weather conditions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could hamper the election.
Justice Ejaz-ul-Ahsan said that the report of the Meteorological Department was to be reviewed by the Election Commission and not by the court. After which the court suspended the decision of the Peshawar High Court to postpone the local body elections in the province and issued notices to the parties. It may be recalled that the Election Commission of Pakistan ECP had filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the order of the Peshawar High Court to postpone the second phase of local body elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
